Formerly known as “child custody” and “visitation”, Illinois now uses the terms “allocation of parental responsibility” and “parenting time” in child-related matters. Allocation of parental responsibility concerns each parent’s right to be involved in making major decisions related to the children (e.g., choice of school, medical matters, and enrollment in activities). Parenting time refers to the scheduled time each parent enjoys with the children including holidays, vacations, and school breaks.
Securing a parent’s right to be an involved parent while ensuring the health and safety of the children requires specialized advocacy. We are balanced in our approach when it comes to protecting children and facilitating meaningful relationships with both parents. To the extent possible, we promote building a respectful, co-parenting relationship that maximizes both parent’s long-term involvement and cooperation.
